Description

Our February camp is a great opportunity for serious chess students
to go beyond their after school chess lessons with day-long lessons on
chess strategy and friendly competition. Taking place in the heart of
downtown San Francisco at the historic Mechanics' Institute Chess Room,
founded in 1854, young players will get to learn and play in a
170-year-old piece of living San Francisco history. Registration will open at 9pm on Friday 2/6.

Important information:

  • 🕤 9:30am to 1:30pm. Campers can be dropped off up to 30 minutes before camp starts.
  • 📅 Additional days will be announced the day before. Current campers will get priority.
  • ✔️ Sign ups open 9pm on Friday, February 6. Both first-come-first-served sign-ups and lottery. Sign up for the
waitlist, and we will select additional students on Saturday.
  • 🥗 Lunch will not be provided. Campers should pack their own lunch and snacks.
  • 🚉 Transport: We are located steps from Montgomery Station and are a stop
on the 2 Bus line. For drivers we recommend the Sutter-Stockton Garage
    for parking.

What to expect:

  • Supervised play where students learn to ask other kids and even adults to play a game
  • Lessons on famous games and basic tactics to help them identify and apply patterns to new situations
  • Introduction to formal chess through the use of clocks and lessons on how to write down chess moves
  • Worksheets, books, and puzzles and other co-operative chess activities
  • Prizes for learning and not just winning
