West Portal Elementary Chess Club - Fall 2024

The Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club, founded in 1854, is excited to offer chess again at West Portal Elementary School. Our chess classes offer beginners the chance to learn chess and experienced players the opportunity to refine their play. Students will be evaluated and placed in smaller groups with others at their level. Our experienced coaches guide children through the royal game of chess, but also help our students develop crucial social and emotional skills. In our classes, students learn the values inherent in chess including: good sportsmanship, patience, and flexibility. Join us and start a lifelong journey through one of the world’s greatest games.

This semester, there will be eight classes total, on Wednesdays from October 30th-December 18th. Please note that there will be no class on November 27th due to Fall Recess. 

Thank you very much to all of our returning families for your patience during our delays this semester. The issues with our paperwork have now been resolved and we are excited to return!

Our class is open to students K-5. Students will be evaluated and placed at a table with students at a comparable skill level.
