Beginner Chess at San Francisco Schoolhouse - Fall 2024

The Mechanics’ Institute Chess Club, founded in 1854, is excited to offer chess at San Francisco Schoolhouse. Our chess classes offer beginners the chance to learn chess and experienced players the opportunity to refine their play. Our coaches guide children through the royal game of chess but also help our students develop crucial social and emotional skills. In our classes, students learn the values inherent in chess including: good sportsmanship, patience, and flexibility. Join us and start a lifelong journey through one of the world’s greatest games. 

The Beginner Class is ideal for students who are new to chess or who are still learning the rules of the game. In this class, we will focus on how the pieces move and their relative values, basic checkmate patterns, and eliminating common beginner mistakes.
